0 Apple still dominates world's top brands: study

(Reuters) - Apple has maintained its place as the world's most valuable brand over the past year, leading a group of technology-related companies that dominate the top 10, according to a study published on Tuesday.

The iPhone and iPad maker has boosted its brand value by 19 percent in the past year to $183 billion, or 37 percent of its market capitalization, according to the annual BrandZ study by leading brands and market-research agency Millward Brown.

Facebook , with a market value of $82 billion after its initial public offering last week, was the fastest climber in the top 100, seeing its brand value rise by 74 percent to $33.2 billion to put it in 19th place.

Seven of the top 10 were technology-related firms, although McDonald's and Coca-Cola kept their respective number four and number six rankings.

Marlboro moved up a notch to seventh place despite anti-smoking campaigns in much of the world.

Nick Cooper, managing director of Millward Brown Optimor which produced the study, said the strength of technology brands was a measure of the central and transformative role it plays in contemporary life.

"It's all pervading," Cooper told Reuters, "and there's a lot of excitement and new news. This is where it's all happening. That tends to increase not only the demand and financial performance but also the role of brand."

Millward Brown, part of global advertising group WPP , takes as its starting point the financial value of the company or the part of the company that produces the brand, and combines it with the brand's ability to create loyalty.

"When cars first appeared or when air travel first appeared, they became liberating. It's the turn of the technology sector at the moment," said Cooper.

Business technology brands also featured prominently in the top 10, with IBM switching places with Google to rise to second place. Microsoft kept its position at number five.

Cooper said the so-called consumerization of IT, in which business hardware and software makers increasingly have to come up to the standards that consumers are used to in their private lives, played a role.

"The brands that are generally demonstrating the best growth are those that tend to be occupying spaces where there is a lot more intuitive natural use, where the consumer experience is informing the B2B experience rather than the other way around."

Mobile phone brands AT&T as number eight, Verizon as number nine, followed by China Mobile <0941.HK> completed the top 10.

Cooper said, however, some technology brands were vulnerable to public opinion swinging against them, especially over emotive issues such as privacy, where Facebook and Google have already suffered a backlash for gathering large amounts of user data.

"Consumer technology is receiving the same kind of scrutiny once reserved for banks and brands will have to respond convincingly to increasing regulatory oversight. This may impact social brands like Facebook in the future," he said.

Cooper added that Apple's increasing its brand value despite the death of its visionary founder Steve Jobs in the past year was extraordinary.

"They are catchable but they've either got to falter or someone else has got to put on a sprint," he said.

0 2013 Ford Shelby GT500, a gentler stampeding Mustang: Motoramic Drives

2013 Shelby GT500

The 2013 Ford Shelby GT500 arrives late this year fresh from its third major makeover in the last four years, Ford's master chief in its battle for pony car dominance. Thanks to an influx of beefier hardware and clever software, the Shelby GT500's performance amazes in every dimension -- almost too much so.

There's no more fitting tribute in the wake of Carroll Shelby's passing last week than to note when Ford engineers vowed that the 2013 version of the street-rocket Mustang bearing his name would hit 200 mph, Shelby accused them of "bulls**ting" him. They told the truth.

The changes wrought on the 2013 Shelby aren't just the monstrous increase in horsepower from 550 hp to 662 hp with 631 ft-lbs of torque, making the 'Stang capable of a 0-60 mph time of just 3.7 seconds. The braking system scrubs excess speed with larger, 6-piston Brembo calipers. To shed weight gained from the bored-out 5.8-liter supercharged V8 engine, Ford installed a carbon-fiber driveshaft and a plastic fuel tank. The engineers worked tirelessly on multiple cooling systems and with Bilstein on an optional performance package, bringing the suspension and handling in line with the hefty increase in power.

The front end sports a more aggressive design and a grille-free opening that contains endless fairings and flaps, increasing front down force by 66% -- crucial in getting the car over 200 mph without reviving the Mustang as an airborne object. The rear end has the new for 2013 taillights and a not-so-subtle quad exhaust producing the bellow of a waking giant.

With my car fitted with the optional "Track Pack" that increases cooling even further -- and bumps the sticker price to $65,120 from the $54,200 base number -- I took to the Road Atlanta racetrack. I braced for a punishing ride that would make me earn my lap time, and instead found a companion as calm and eager to reward as a day-care teacher. There was no understeer to speak of, and the rear was planted on power down. The gear ratios from the beefed-up Tremec six-speed manual were so long that the car tricks you into thinking you're going slower than you actual velocity. The car will do 60 mph in just 1st gear, and I was still in 3rd at 140 mph. It felt, dare I say it, tame.

And I didn't want it to.

2013 Ford Shelby GT500

I wanted to manhandle the car, holding my breath every turn, praying I would emerge from the other side without bending metal or myself. I worried that in their drive to wrangle this herd of wild horses, the Ford engineers had actually done their jobs too well.

The same was true when I hit the country roads. The 242 additional horsepower in the GT500 over the upgraded Mustang GT barely made its presence known -- in part because the GT500 only makes its maximum when the car "over revs" from its normal redline of 6,250 rpm to 7,000 rpm in eight-second bursts, and the tall gear ratios prevent the chiropractic snap you'd expect when nailing the gas pedal. As a cruiser, it projects all the coolness a Shelby should, but I wasn't there to prance about. I brought spare boxer shorts and I expected to need them.

The next day brought us to the drag strip, and there the spirit of Carroll Shelby emerged. The long gear ratios suddenly made sense, perfectly matched for the task of producing an 11.7-second quarter mile time, just a bit faster than the GT500's archenemy, the Chevrolet Camaro ZL1. Credit Ford's launch control system, perhaps the best on any production car today, that lets drivers pick an engine start limit by 100 revs at a time to match the conditions on the track. It was far smarter than I was, and no matter how hard I tried with the traction control turned off, I couldn't beat the system.

69 Shelby GT500Carroll Shelby was famous for saying, "Whatever the competition comes up with, we're going to kick the hell out of them." In a drag race or lapping around the Nurburgring, the 2013 Shelby GT500 probably will. It's a car that Ford claim can do everything -- and back it up. It's a great car to cruise down the highway or over country roads. It can drag race with the best and can lap a racetrack like a car half its size. It's fantastic -- and yet I feel a little let down.

The Shelbys of decades past were many things, but like Carroll Shelby himself, "refined" wasn't one of their selling points. All the best of his muscle cars carried a madness that makes them magical. If you want to go blisteringly fast in a straight line and reign as the king of the stoplights, then buy this Shelby. But if you want your pony to provide a rush of adrenaline, the more unpredictable, wild Mustang GT will let you live at the limits for less money. With the GT500, you can leave your spare boxers at home.

0 Steve Jobs' Last Wishes

Steve Jobs' Last Wishes

Without Steve Jobs here to defend himself, we're seeing a lot of talk about the visionary's last wishes -- the final visions in that brain that the Apple founder never saw to completion. The man was a genius, so it's no surprise he had a lot of ideas bouncing around in there. But even if he may have said some off handed things for ideas, as any creative-type knows, a lot of brainchildren are never born. Let's take a look at how Steve Jobs' last wishes are coming along.

Vision: Bigger iPhone Screen

Evidence: Following the rumors floating around that Apple's planning a 4 inch iPhone screen, a half inch upgrade from its 3.5 model. Bloomberg has a report perpetuating this rumor saying Steve Jobs wanted it that way. "Apple co-founder Steve Jobs had worked closely on the redesigned phone before his death in October" an anonymous source told Bloomberg's Adam Satariano and Jun Yang.

Likelihood: This rumor has seen wide circulation, with The Wall Street Journal even going with it. As the last iPhone and iPad releases prove, rumors, especially on product design are not to be trusted. But, as The Atlantic Wire's Adam Clark Estes notes, if Apple's trying to compete with other smartphones, it might want to increase screen

Vision: iCar

Evidence: An Apple board member says so. "Look at the car industry; it's a tragedy in America. Who is designing the cars?" Mickey Drexler, the CEO of JCrew and a board member said at a Fast Company conference. "Steve's dream before he died was to design an iCar."

Likelihood: Not at all. Because an Apple board member says so. "He never did design it," added Drexler. Also, cars are a bit out of Apple's purview. The company thus far has focused on living room things. The garage doesn't quite fit.

Vision: Apple TV

Evidence: This is an oldie but goodie. It's all based on this quote from Walter Issacson's biography of the late-CEO. "I'd like to create an integrated television set," Jobs told Issacson. "It would be seamlessly synced with all of your devices and with iCloud... It will have the simplest user interface you could imagine. I finally cracked it."

Likelihood: We don't know if this TV will have cracked the streaming TV predicament until it comes out. And even though the Foxconn CEO did not say that its preparing for iTV, this feels like the most inevitable of his dreams to come true. The rumor mill at least thinks it's going to happen. Plus that board member, Drexler, kind of made it seem like Apple's making something TV-esque. "You know, Apple has 10 products," he said. "The living room they're dealing with at some point in the near future."

0 Zynga price falls 13.3% as Facebook IPO trades flat

Shares of online social game maker Zynga plunged 13.3 percent and triggered a trading halt Friday as Facebook's IPO fell flat with investors.

Shares in Zynga, which makes popular games used on Facebook and other platforms, were halted at $7.17, near where they started at the beginning of the week before a strong climb ahead of Facebook's market debut.

Shares of other popular social media companies like Pandora, LinkedIn, and Groupon also tumbled with the Facebook listing: Pandora was off 5.2 percent, LinkedIn 1.2 percent and Groupon 5.6 percent.

Zynga provides about 15 percent of Facebook's revenue, but the company does not hold shares in Facebook.

Nevertheless, its shares fell in parallel with Facebook's, which opened on the Nasdaq Friday at $42 but then quickly fell back to the initial public offering price of $38 as early investors grabbed profits.

At $7.17, Zynga's price was far below its December 2011 IPO price of $10.

Zynga makes and operates the online games FarmVille, Mafia Wars CityVille, Words With Friends and Zynga Poker.

0 Fitur Baru Google "Graphic Knowledge"
